Best Time to Visit:

The overall best time to visit Peru is during the dry season from May to October! Temperatures cool off and rainfall is minimal, making it the perfect time to trek Machu Picchu and have the clearest views of the Andes mountains!

Peak season is June to August, where rainfall is at its absolute lowest. If you’re visiting for the Amazon Rainforest, this is the best time to go!

If you’re most excited for Machu Picchu, I recommend sticking to the shoulder months (April – May and September – October) for a less crowded visit. As you can imagine, it gets quite busy during the peak season!

Getting Around

LIMA + CUSCO: The cities are quite walkable, but you can also call Ubers here for a VERY low fare! (Some were as cheap as $2 USD for a ride)

For the rest of the country, buses and flights are the best way to travel between places! Many tours will also include transportation – such as those to Machu Picchu or Huacachina.

Travel Requirements

Make sure your passport has six months of validity, regardless of how long you will be staying in Peru!

Recommended vaccinations if visiting the Amazon: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Yellow Fever. I would also recommend preventative antimalarial medications for those visiting the Amazon.

SUSTAINABLE + ETHICAL TRAVEL IN PERU

  • Book tours and experiences with local guides – not only to support local businesses, but they will know much more about Peruvian culture and history! You will get a much better experience in a small tour group than on a large hop on-hop off bus.
  • Respect the environment – stay on marked trails when trekking, don’t touch the ruins, and give the alpacas space.
  • Respect the locals – it’s quite common to photograph Peruvians in colorful traditional clothing, but please ask permission prior to doing so!
  • Avoid contributing to overtourism by visiting during shoulder seasons – March to May and October to November!
