Canggu: The Ultimate Travel Guide

May 30, 2023

Canggu has become quite the Bali hotspot in recent years. Its fun beach clubs, trendy cafés, and beautiful villas have transformed it into a bit of an instagram paradise. I think it’s the perfect first stop on your trip to Bali to try Indonesian cuisine, relax at a spa, and settle in to Balinese culture!

Things to Do in Canggu

Visit the Spas

BODYWORKS SPA

The first thing we did when we arrived in Bali was head to a spa to work off our jet lag after 35 hours of travel. We were SO impressed with this spa from the moment we walked in – look at how gorgeous this lobby is!

This full service spa has an extensive list of treatments which can be found here. The spa also offers two packages – which is what we booked! Our package included a 65 minute full body balinese massage, a gua sha facial, and a flower bath. The package was 1 million IDR per person (about $67 USD).

The massages were so relaxing and perfect for soothing our tense muscles after so many hours spent crammed in an airplane. We were able to choose from a long list of different aromatherapy options (we went for the relaxation aromatherapy – lavender and bergamot).

My skin was absolutely glowing after the facial, and the gua sha helped decrease the swelling in my face from long travel. Gua sha can help with lymphatic drainage, increase circulation, and it’s also a lovely soft massage for the face! Bodyworks also offers a steaming and extraction with your facial.

And of course, your trip to Bali isn’t complete without a dip in an iconic flower bath. Many flower baths in Bali are outdoors, so the water is cold and there’s often little bugs everywhere. This is why we were so excited to get to have this experience in the spa. The water was warm and enjoyable, and there were definitely no tiny bugs.

OTHER SPAS IN THE CANGGU/SEMINYAK AREA: The Legian Spa, Sundari, AMO Spa, Spring Spa

Go shopping at the Sunday market

The Canggu Sunday Market is a fantastic way to support local vendors and explore their culture through foods, handmade goods, and more! Every Sunday, locals flock to these markets and set up stands to sell organic foods, clothing, handmade decor, and more!

LA Brisa

La Brisa is a beach club, but every Sunday they host a market to support local farmers and vendors! Wander through the market and shop organic fruits, handmade and sustainable products, home decor, body care, etc. There are tons of vendors selling prepared food and drink and offering samples, so don’t be afraid to show up hungry!

THE DETAILS | La Brisa is open every Sunday from 10am – 4pm. I highly recommend getting there early as it gets packed! There is no entrance fee, it’s totally free to roam around the market!

OTHER MARKETS IN CANGGU: Love Anchor, Samadi, Bali Niki Natural Art Market

Check out the beach clubs

the lawn

The Lawn is one of the most popular beach clubs in the Canggu area and it’s easy to see why! This beautiful beach club offers luxe daybeds, an infinity pool, beach access, and an incredible sunset view. We spent the entire day lounging on a daybed and enjoying the views of Batu Bolong beach. It definitely has more chilled out vibes than some of the other “party” beach clubs in Canggu, which is why we loved it! The cocktails here are delicious but quite mild, which I enjoy as it means I can try more drinks but heavyweights beware. The menu is quite westernized, serving up foods such as pizzas, pastas, and snacks and everything we tried was very tasty.

THE DETAILS | Reservations are required for daybeds and strongly encouraged for tables in the lounge area. Reservations can be made through their website or via WhatsApp. There is a minimum spend associated with the daybeds, which I believe changes based on the season. We went during high season and had a minimum spend of 2.5 million IDR (about $167 USD) for a bed right next to the pool.

OTHER BEACH CLUBS IN THE CANGGU/SEMINYAK AREA:

FINNS | Boasts its name as the best beach club in the world. Located on Berawa beach and is definitely the place to go if you’re looking for a party!

POTATO HEAD | Another beautiful beach club in Seminyak with daybeds, great cocktails, and international DJs.

CAFE DEL MAR | Super stylish beach club with a massive infinity pool overlooking the beach. Check their event calendar as they host top-notch international DJs.

enjoy the foodie scene

Canggu is known for its trendy cafés, beachfront restaurants, and plenty of organic and vegan options. Here’s a list of some of my favorite eats in Canggu:

Nook

This gorgeous boho café is home to my favorite latte in Canggu. Their menu is full of healthy options, smoothie bowls, fresh juices, and more! We visited Nook several times and had a great experience each time we went.

ORDER | The breakfast board, a latte

crate

Crate café has become an insta hotspot in the last few years. This Aussie-inspired café serves up delicious brunch, smoothie bowls, and coffees. The plating of everything is gorgeous and it tastes even better! Warning: the portion sizes are massive here. We ordered way too much food on accident! Since this café has become so popular, it gets quite busy. Be prepared to wait in line for a bit!

ORDER | Smoothie bowls

Seasalt

This beachfront restaurant is located in Seminyak, but it’s just a short drive from Canggu. This was one of the most delicious meals we had during our time here. All the ingredients were so fresh, the presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were immaculate. Seasalt honors its name by serving up black salt butter (absolutely delicious) as a starter, and serving each meal with their five signature salts to taste. It was so fun trying each flavor with our dishes and experimenting.

Seasalt is situated right next to the sand and features an incredible view of the sunset. Grab an early reservation to get seated right up front with the best views!

ORDER |  pork belly, wagyu short rib

where to stay

I highly recommend checking out Airbnb for stays in Canggu! There are so many unique villas with local owners. We stayed in a stunning villa in Kerobokan, which was right in between Canggu and Seminyak. This was the perfect central location for us because it allowed us to visit both areas! Everything in the Canggu/Seminyak area is quite close to one another, so you really can’t go wrong with a stay here!

We stayed in Villa Mimpi Kita, a stunning open-air Airbnb. The open-air concept truly allows you to enjoy nature right from your living room! Don’t worry – the bedrooms are closed and have air conditioning. This three-bedroom villa boasts a pool, full kitchen, and huge living room. We spent a good bit of time here just relaxing and taking it all in!
