The best time to visit Mexico is during the dry season, from December to April! Temperatures are still quite warm (around 80°F), and the days are sunny with blue skies!
From June to November, heavy rainfall is common and some coastal areas can see hurricanes. The eastern edge of the country from Cancun to Tulum will see quite a lot of sargassum (seaweed) from May to October.
Getting Around
The best way to get around in Mexico is by renting a car or using a transfer service. Taxis are readily available in much of Mexico, but rates are often unreliable and subject to your driver. If you are spending the majority of your time at a resort, I recommend having your accommodation set up a private transfer to/from the airport. If you plan on venturing out an exploring, a rental car is the way to go!
Travel Requirements
Make sure your passport has six months of validity, regardless of how long you will be staying in Mexico!
If you plan on renting a car during your time in Mexico, make sure you get an International Driver’s Permit prior to arrival.
Know Before You Go
CURRENCY |Mexican peso. Some resorts will accept Visa and Mastercard. I highly recommend exchanging your money before you go, you’ll likely get a better exchange rate!
PLUG TYPE | Type A + B
PHONE COVERAGE | Many US phone plans include coverage for Mexico, but check your plan before you go! If not, you can purchase an eSim. TelCel has the best coverage in Mexico!
SUSTAINABLE + ETHICAL TRAVEL IN MEXICO
Choose eco-friendly hotels (like Papaya Playa Projector Azulik) and local accommodation instead of staying in large all-inclusive hotels. All-inclusives generally keep you from leaving the resort to experience the local culture + local foods of Mexico!
Support animal conservation practices at Centro Ecologic Akumal, a non-profit that protects marine wildlife. They offer volunteer opportunities to protect sea turtles during nesting (and during their trek into the ocean).
Contribute to Mexico’s economy by choosing local restaurants and shops! You’ll find much better food in local restaurants than you will in large chains anyways!
