Best Time to Visit:
The best time to travel to Portugal is during the shoulder seasons – April/May and September/October! You will see gorgeous weather with fewer crowds!
The hotter summer months of July and August bring in flocks of tourists – along with sweltering hot weather. I wouldn’t recommend the cities as it’s quite hot, but this is the best time to visit the Algarve region of Portugal – it’s the only time of year the water is bearable to swim in!
November through March marks the rainy season in Portugal, although it still remains somewhat warm! If you don’t mind the frequent rain, you’ll find cheaper prices and less crowds!
Getting Around
The best way to get around Portugal is by taking the train or flying. Book your train tickets in advance on Comboios de Portugal!
Cities such as Lisbon and Porto are quite walkable, but the Algarve region is quite spread out. Renting a car can be a great option in this region, but public transporatation, taxis, and uber are all widely available as well!
Travel Requirements
There are currently no special certificates or applications to enter Portugal, just your passport will do!
If you plan on renting a car during your time in Portugal, make sure you get an International Driver’s Permit prior to arrival.

- Support local businesses – stay in locally-owned accommodations, eat at local restaurants rather than chains, purchase souvenirs from Portuguese artisans rather than at imported shops.
- Utilize public transportation whenever possible. Many cities and towns are walkable as well – if you’re able to walk, walk!
- Respect historical sights – do not touch ancient cathedrals and monuments as the oil on our fingers can wear down the materials.
- Avoid contributing to overtourism by visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall).
